Surface design as any technique that manipulates or changes the surface of a fabric. This would include: painting, dyeing, printing/stamping, stenciling, applying resists, stitching, embellishing (e.g. adding beads), collaging, weaving, etc.  Surface design involves incorporating a designer’s work with surfaces to create eye-catching visual appeal or provide information. Surface design is all around us, whether it’s woven products, ceramics, wallpapers, t-shirts, or other surfaces that exhibit designs using a variety of mediums. surface design is just about creating an eye-catching & inviting feel for a surface in a living space or on a fabric – surface designs are often incredibly functional and are often used to provide information to an audience.

By the end of this course, students will be able to –

  • Classify the regional embroideries of India.
  • Identify a specific embroidery style of India on the basis of colors, motifs, and layout.
  • Identify influencing factors for development and evolution of a specific embroidered textile.

here are no boundaries on what Fabric can be. Fashion Design as a profession will be incomplete without the understanding of the raw – materials involved in the process of creating the garments. The understanding of the fibre, yarn and fabric and their properties is essential to build the designs for today and tomorrow. Fabric studies aims to develop professional competency in the field of textiles - its appreciation, understanding of various techniques of woven and knitting fabrics.  The students will develop the skill of handling and using fabric in various aspects of design. Assignments like creating a Textile Glossary with emphasis on the detailing of fabric swatches collected through market surveys will encourage the students to apply the learning for future design projects throughout the programme.
